Wherever possible...

So what do we mean when we say we're 'green'?

Well, it's a bit of a buzz word and has been done to death, but let us explain what we've done in creating our little room!

- we've used only reclaimed materials and wood to build everything in the shop.

Why? Because there's so much stuff in the world already that there really is no need for a re-fit kit! Plus, we think it looks better this way

 - alongside Robin Dauncey's local stoneware, the cups, plates, vases and random bits all come from charity shops or secondhand places like Loose's plus Norwich freecyclers have helped us out heaps

Why? Same as above - there's so much great stuff, plus we can give money to charities instead of Ikea and The Pier

- our telephone and internet provider, the Phone Co-Op, have no shareholders and investors to answer to and run their business around strong ethical principles

Why? BT, Virgin...they're all so big that they we'd rather give our money to a company whose principles are more important than profits

- we offer you a 100% GUARANTEE that we buy ABSOLUTELY NOTHING from Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Lidl or their counterparts!

Why? We believe that the 'giants' have gone a long way to destroying communities not only in this country but throughout the world. Asda are owned by WalMart, one of the most unethical companies on the planet. Tesco similarly threaten long-established markets the world over - like India, where they are doing their best to break in to the HUGE market that has for centuries survived without international conglomerates that bankrupt small businesses and take profits back to their own bank accounts

- You will not see the words 'wherever possible'! Lots of places say 'wherever possible...we use only fair-trade etc...'.

Why? This often translates as 'if we run out of something, we'll run down to Tesco and grab whatever we can get!' WE DO NOT DO THIS! If we run out, we run out. We believe it's better to go without than to source from unethical suppliers

- we aim not to preach

Why? Well...we hope all this doesn't sound like a lecture in how to be good! We know we're not perfect and we certainly don't want to get on our high horse about things - this is just a mission statement for us and so you, if you're interested, can see that we mean what we say and that we're not just trying to get some of the green dollar that seems so fashionable right now!

We're not trying to make loads of cash and be shrewd business types! We just want to run a business we believe in and serve you guys with great coffee, teas and good food, surrounded by heaps of books and things to make us think!

A true revolutionary prepares him or herself for when revolution is ripe - We've got the coffee to keep you awake till then!
